Gun-warning letter sent to Tantasqua families

STURBRIDGE—
School officials sent a letter home with students this week telling parents and guardians “that five or fewer” students at Tantasqua Senior High School “may be involved with gun issues.”

Police did not return telephone calls yesterday seeking information on the matter.

Superintendent of Schools Kathleen H. Reynolds said school officials met with police this week to talk about information that some students at the school might have an interest in possessing or buying a gun. Ms. Reynolds said it was her understanding that possibly two students at the high school might be arrested. As of yesterday afternoon, she did not know if that occurred.

Ms. Reynolds said no guns had been found at the school.

“There is no evidence whatsoever that any were on the property of the school,” she said.

In the letter mailed and given to high school students to take home Thursday, Ms. Reynolds said, “Youngsters have reported during questioning that they knew of someone who had purchased a gun or knew of someone who wished to purchase a gun.”

Ms. Reynolds said in the letter that school officials want to keep parents and guardians “informed of all occurrences.”

“Please know that school staff are working in close collaboration with the Sturbridge police department and with related law-enforcement agencies to determine the accuracy of reports and to ensure the safety of all our youngsters.

“We are asking parents to please have conversations with their youngsters regarding any rumors or firsthand knowledge that they may have regarding gun possession among Tantasqua High School students.”

“In this community this isn’t the kind of thing we expect,” Ms. Reynolds said.

She said yesterday afternoon that with the exception of one student who objected to the word “youngster,” there had been no reaction to Thursday’s letter.

I wonder who might have sold the gun...

The only reason I recognized the name of this school is because I finally found out to pronounce it after driving by it for months going to New Braintree... such a quiet looking school...

Youngster is the new code word for wanna be GANGSTER

I'm sort of missing something here...I know lots of kids who want a gun or who have guns. Granted it was bought by their parents for them for hunting or plinking but you mean to tell me now just wanting to own or buy a gun is something illegal?
Or do they mean that these kids were trying to buy guns illegally?

I wonder if it's going to be much ado about nothing...like kids just wanting a shotgun for spring hunting season.

I guess my brother and I had "gun issues" when we were kids. Now my brother teaches sixth grade...and still has "gun issues"...as does my niece.

I wonder if his district will send a letter home to the parents describing teachers with "gun issues". I mean, what can you say about a group of teachers that dress-up in period uniforms and re-enact civil war battles? Especially when they are in a rebel outfit! Dirty slavers!!! Just who is being hired to teach our children?!

‘Gun issues’ reported at high school
STURBRIDGE – Police continue to investigate the case of a stolen handgun that led officials at Tantasqua High School to warn parents last week about “gun issues” at the school.

Superintendent Kathleen Reynolds, in a letter to high school parents on Thursday, said the police investigation led to students reporting that they “knew of someone who had purchased a gun or knew of someone who wished to purchase a gun,” the letter stated.

“On Thursday, we were just notified by the police that a handful, less than five students, may potentially be involved with wanting to purchase or having to purchase a gun,” Reynolds said yesterday.

There were no guns found nor purchased on school grounds, she said.

So there's a stolen handgun and some kids that like guns...still nothing tying the two together.
