Suspected Kidnapper Captured After High Speed Chase

By Nick Spinetto

Only CBS 3 News was there as 32 year old, Justin Durphey was taken away by State Police. He's now being held at the Springfield State Police Barracks.

The Springfield, VT resident is being charged with attempted murder, rage, kidnapping, as well as other criminal charges.

According to police, Durphey allegedly kidnapped a Vermont woman and raped her.

It's unclear at this time how she got away, but nearly three hours after alleged attack, she called Massachusetts State Police and gave a description of both Duphrey and his minivan.

A short time later, a Massachusetts State Trooper spotted Durphrey's minivan along I-91 South in Springfield.

The Trooper attempted to pull Durphey over, but he sped up and a high speed chase began.

Police were able to stop him a short time later in Longmeadow near the Connecticut boarder. But when they tried to arrest Durphey he pointed a .22 caliber rifle at them.

A short stand-off began. Between the car chase and the stand-off, traffic was backed up for nearly six miles and I-91 was at a stand still for almost two hours.

Once the stand-off ended, Justin Durphey was arrested without incident. He's being interviewed by both Vermont and Massachusetts State Police. He'll be arraigned Monday morning in Springfield District Court.

=======================================

I happen to know that the Trooper who arrested this guy was working a PAID DETAIL when he initiated the chase. We'll see if the media prints that fact. It was noted in the Press Release.

I heard this as it was going on today...AWESOME job and end to a situation that sounded like it could have had potential to go badly. Great heads up by the detail trooper!

Vermont suspect nabbed after brief armed standoff in Massachusetts

2/10/2006, 9:01 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A man suspected of kidnapping a woman in Vermont was arrested by Massachusetts State Police on Friday after a brief pursuit and armed standoff on Interstate 91.

Vermont State Police, acting on information from the alleged victim, provided Massachusetts authorities with a description of the man's vehicle.

A state trooper working a detail on I-91 spotted the vehicle headed south at about 2:30 p.m.

An attempt to stop it failed, so state police chased the suspect down I-91 to Longmeadow where he crashed into a guardrail after driving over a tire deflation device deployed by police.

When police tried to arrest the driver, identified as Justin J. Durphey, 32, of Springfield, Vt., he leveled a .22 caliber rifle at them. After a brief standoff, Durphey surrendered.

He was charged in Massachusetts with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder; illegal possession of a firearm; rape; kidnapping and numerous motor vehicle charges including failure to stop for a police officer.

Durphey is scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Monday.

What do you know The Republican reported he was on a detail. I am sure the Globe and Herald will leave it out.

Rifle standoff ends in arrest on I-91

Saturday, February 11, 2006

LONGMEADOW - A Vermont man sought by police in that state for kidnapping was arrested by Massachusetts State Police yesterday after a brief standoff on Interstate 91, where they said he pointed a rifle at them.

Police said Justin J. Durphey of Springfield, Vt., refused to stop for a state trooper on I-91 in Springfield, but lost control of his car and crashed into a guardrail in Longmeadow when Trooper David Podworski successfully used a tire-deflation device.

Durphey pointed a .22-caliber rifle at troopers as Podworski was making the arrest, police said, but he soon surrendered with nobody getting hurt.

Traffic on the southbound lanes of I-91 was backed up after the 3 p.m. arrest.

Durphey was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, illegal possession of a firearm, kidnapping, rape and failing to stop for a police officer.

Vermont state police had put out a bulletin at noon to look for Durphey in connection with a kidnapping earlier in the day.

Holyoke Police Chief Anthony R. Scott said the alleged victim got away from Durphey at the Holiday Inn in Holyoke and called police who took her to Holyoke Medical Center.

Durphey is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Springfield District Court.

The Republican makes no mention of the Detail. The subject also admitted that he had fired on the Troopers before surrendering.

I guess I gave them to much credit, the report on the website from the AP did mention he was on a detail.

Continuing Coverage: VT Man Captured in Longmeadow

We have a much clearer picture about this afternoon's kidnapping and attempted murder---than when we first broke this story at six.

As we reported then---Justin Durphey was caught in Longmeadow after leading police on a high speed chase, but we have since learned his reign of terror began early this morning in Guilford, Vermont---amid the terrifying screams of his ex-girlfriend being kidnapped.

This is how it ended----with a high speed chase and a short stand-off along 91 South in Longmeadow, but how it began is still being unraveled.

Vermont State Police say it started with a call that a woman was screaming for help.

That call came in from Guilford early this morning, a few miles north of the state line.

Vermont State Police launched an intense ground and aerial search that included help from New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

A short time later, a Massachusetts State Trooper spotted the minivan and pursued him into Longmeadow.

Durphey refused to pull over and a high speed chase began.

He eventually crashed after police put spike strips across a portion of 91 South near Longmeadow.

But Durphey wouldn't go easily.

As police approached the van he pointed a .22 caliber rifle at them---causing a stand-off.

No one was hurt, as he surrendered soon after and taken into custody.

Just before the chase, Massachusetts State Police received a call from the 37 missing woman---saying Durphey had kidnapped and raped her.

It's unclear at this time if she escaped or if Durphey let her go.

32 year old Justin Durphey is being charged with 2 counts of attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, as well as other charges.

This guys a real piece of $#&!...great job by the MSP. Sounds like it could've gotten real bad once they got the car stopped!

I have worked with this guy's victim for some time now and was horrified to find out about this. I have also had experience with this particular POS through work, and believe me, POS he is...this latest incident only removes all doubt, if anyone had any at all...
I want to thank you all for your hard work in catching him. Please be sure to show him all the 'courtesy' you can while he abides in your fair state. He'd better pray he doesn't get up north again...

Yeah heard this as it was going on that day too. I think the female was found/got away in Holyoke. Although I didn't quite get the details of the "victim" I did hear that the victim had informed Holyoke PD, which Holyoke in turn notified MSP via radio, that the guy had a .22 rifle and was suicidal and homicidal. And that was just seconds before they had the guy stopped.
