The Federal gov't is too busy protecting the borders of other nations. It is about time one of the states takes the ball and runs with it. If the Lone Star State can do it, why can't (or won't) the federal gov't that is constitutionally responsible for the national border do it?

Texas boosts border watch

Governor cites escalating crime, security threats

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry, declaring Thursday that Texans must combat escalating crime and drug violence along the Mexican border, announced "Operation Rio Grande" to ramp up law enforcement from El Paso to Brownsville.

"There is a great concern that the drug trade is becoming more aggressive, but also terrorist organizations are seeking to exploit our porous border," Perry said, flanked by dozens of border-area sheriffs and deputies wearing cowboy hats and star-shaped badges.

The governor also placed the State Operations Center on highest alert, meaning members of four state agencies will work around the clock supporting the new operation. The emergency status is typically reserved for natural disasters such as hurricanes.

Perry declined to reveal the cost of Operation Rio Grande or how many extra law enforcement officers it deploys to the border.

The new initiative follows his December announcement of $10 million in state aid for "Operation Linebacker," which lets local law enforcement provide greater support to U.S. border officers.

While stating that the federal government remains responsible for enforcing the sovereignty of the border, Perry said he felt compelled to act as well.

"The state will not wait for Washington to take all necessary actions. What we can do, we will, starting now," he said.

The governor said Operation Rio Grande seeks to better protect security within 100 miles of the border. Provisions include:

•An unspecified number of state troopers acting as rapid response teams to trouble spots.

•Covert patrols and surveillance by Department of Public Safety investigators with specialties in narcotics, motor vehicle theft and criminal intelligence.
•DPS helicopters, planes and special weapons and tactics teams along with plans for regional rapid response teams.
•Texas Rangers to conduct a border-wide investigation into drug-related skirmishes with alleged members of the Mexican military.
•Canine search teams from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, game wardens from the Texas Parks and Wildlife and road barriers from the Texas Department of Transportation.
Perry said he's alarmed by drug-related kidnappings and murders in Laredo and the discovery of a stockpile of weapons, including improvised explosive devices and hand grenades, in the border town.

He also mentioned a January encounter near El Paso between Texas lawmen and heavily armed intruders wearing Mexican military uniforms.

"The illegal activity along the border is escalating. Well-armed narco-terrorists are becoming increasingly bold," he said.

Perry praised the Bush administration's budget proposal unveiled this week, because it includes funds for 1,500 new Border Patrol agents and 6,700 more detention beds.

Members of the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition were in Washington this week, seeking federal support for Operation Linebacker.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department has restarted a program that would allow governors to receive federal funds for border enforcement if it is coordinated with the Border Patrol.

"To the extent we are giving money to states or letting states use Homeland Security money, we are welcoming their assistance but it has to come within the framework of a common strategy, a common picture," Chertoff said. "We don't want to have two different groups of law enforcement folks operating in an uncoordinated fashion."

Chronicle reporter Gebe Martinez contributed to this report from Washington, D.C.

If their dealings with the feds are like mine the feds are useless when it comes to immigration.

You can't put all the blame on ICE. They are purposely understaffed. In my experience, there are states with only two ICE agents in it. Put yourselves in their shoes, what would you do if you only had one officer on patrol in a city like Boston? Have him run radar in the school zone, or responding to big emergencies? The same holds true for ICE, they don't have enough bodies to keep on top of the rapists and drug dealers in the jails who need to be deported, so try to understand why they don't "snap to" when you have jose shit the dishwasher stopped for a taillight out.

I fear the day Jose the dishwasher with a Mexican DL is actually, Akmed the suicide bomber. The blame lies with those making the laws not the overworked grunts.

10-4 on that. Rest assured though, the response will be different for Akmed rather than Jose (or Hose B).

The border is a joke. Not enough men to cover it. The wall is a joke, the walls are only put up around populated areas as a show.
The Illegal aliens, no the invaders are walking around them or staging mass crossongs where only 10 or 15 agents are trying to stop 100 or so invaders crossing at the same time. We ( USMC ) where on the border stopping drug runners but mostly we got JOSEB and his crew crossing to pick fruit and veggies at the farm. Then we did what we where supposed to do which was defend Border Patrol Agents from snipers and such and we got pulled off the border for shooting a guy. The system could work if the politicians would stop screwing it up. We ( America ) are being invaded and our poloticians only help. The taliban and othe groups can come ion any time they want.

My 2 Cents.

DELTA784's BORDER SECURITY PLAN

1) Starting at the border, take all land one mile into the US, by eminent domain, and bulldoze it flat.

2) Build 15-foot concrete walls across the length of the border, and at the one-mile inland point.

3) Install a 15-foot, electrified, chain-link fence, topped with concertina wire, 50 yards after the border wall. In-between the fence and the inland wall, place thousands of anti-personnel land mines.

4) Place signs in English, Spanish, French, and every other conceivable language on the fence, warning of sure death on the other side. Include a little cartoon of someone jumping the fence, and being blown to smithereens.

5) Just after the inland wall, place guard towers 500 meters apart, with swivel-mounted 7.62mm machine guns. Man them with Guard & Reserve troops on their Annual Training period.

6) If anyone is stupid enough to jump the wall, leave their bodies there, as a warning to others.

While admittedley a bit harsh, I'm confident this would severely curtail the land-based illegal immigration problem.

Sounds good I will bring a shovel and donate my time to get it started. Also it worked well in Cuba.

Outstanding idea, Delta! Pass the shovel, I'll get busy. Another way to nip this nonsense in the bud is to really crack down on those who hire illegals. These people are economic refugees for the most part, meaning they are coming for personal, financial reasons, and not due to a strong desire to become Americans, like our ancestors. All the government has to do, is enact the same strategy that they do with drug dealers, i.e, if someone hires an illegal, seize their property, business, farm, factory, etc., and put them in jail. It would end. When employers stop hiring illegals, they will go away, simple as that. Also, give local and state police authority to enforce immigration laws, as stated in the 1996 Immigration Reform Act, and streamline the paperwork process for deporting someone. Right now, it takes all day to write an alien up for deportation. The paperwork needs to be reduced to the "citation" level of processing. Off my soapbox. Over.

I disagree on one point Delta....Why take 1 mile of US land and bulldoze farms and homes of hard working Americans? Do what General Pershing did....gallop into Mexico and take their land and make it a buffer zone. Israel did it too with the Gaza Strip and Golan Heights....now THAT"S harsh!!! LOL

Excellent point......it's very much a work in progress, so I'll be sure to include that recommendation when I submit it to the DHS.

Man them with Guard & Reserve troops on their Annual Training period.

Based on the current sentiment regarding this issue in this country today I'de be willing to bet that Delta's proposal would also boost recruitment in the Guard and Reserve, which could also be considered as a solution to a problem...Sounds pretty good, might just sell it.
