Internship/volunteer

So, I'm still in school (CJ major) and I was wondering if any departments would let me volunteer my time in hopes of getting my foot in the door so I can eventually become a police officer. Is it just something I'm making up in my mind or do any departments actually allow this? About a year ago, I went to my local department and inquired about any possible volunteer work. The guy at the desk just looked at me like I had 3 heads and said he didn't know what I was talking about. Does anyone know any possibilities that I could follow up on? I'll do anything they ask, it doesn't matter to me what duties they give me. Hell, I'll even spit shine their boots if that gives me a better chance to get on the job. Thanks in advance.

Brian

Try your school's police department

You should sign up for an internship - then you will get college credits for your work.

We use senior citizen volunteers and college interns all of the time. I have some volunteer opportunities for reliable people with good writing, organization and computer skills.

If you are any good I even have a 30 year old unsolved murder for the right person to work on.

Keep looking around, call some depts and see what they say. I did an internship during college and it was fantastic. Great insight to what policing is all about and made me want the job even more.....Living the dream now.....

I got another question about internships. Let's say I got a position with a Civil Service department. So I go ahead and take the test and they want to hire me but I'm not at the top of the list. Would there be any way to still get a job there without having the best score? I think the answer's "no" but I don't know much about how that works yet... I gotta do some more reading in the meantime.

Ummm...No, not in the chaotic world of Civil Circus. You need a damn near perfect score to even have a shot. Unfortunately, they cannot "jump" to your spot on the list. At least not techinically anyway......

Also, as far as the internships go, try the MSP. I worked at MSP Boston (H-4) during my senior year in college. Great experience and a great bunch of guys and gals!!!

Those of you that have done an internship, did you get to choose your hours and were they flexible at all? I already have a pretty tight schedule and the only free time I have is really late at night and into the early morning. If you could post up about your experience, I would appreciate that.

bluesamurai22-

I'm assuming the internship you are offering is in Burlington? I don't even know where that is so I'm sure it's too far of a drive for me. I'm in Pembroke.

Is that 1975 murder the last one you had? Just wondering why you're so hung up on it.

Wow, I guess the folks over at Dedham Fire didn't require a spell test.

DVET.......you just started the BFD Academy, yet you still insist on posting on MassCops.

We have been pretty lucky. Our last murder was in the 80's - we are overdue for another.

The thing about this case is that this guy was never identified. There is little hope in fully solving it but it should be possible to identify him. It's not a big priority to a lot of people but his family should know what happened to him.
