FRAMINGHAM -- Veteran Framingham Police Lt. Vincent Alfano is leaving the department after being named the new Bolton Police Chief on Thursday.
Alfano, a nearly 18-year member of the force, will start in Bolton on Feb. 27.
"It’s our loss and Bolton’s gain," said Framingham Police Chief Steven Carl. "I enjoyed working with him."
Alfano was chosen unanimously by the Bolton Board of Selectmen. He was picked over Worcester Police Lt. Richard Bates and Athol Police Chief Timothy Anderson, said Bolton Town Administrator Jodi Ross.
He was one of 98 applicants for the job in October, Ross said.
"I think his education, his experience, everything just closely matched the requirements of the position," said Ross. "After listening to his management philosophy, he just seemed the best fit for Bolton."
Alfano joined the Framingham Police in 1988, and has served as the second in command of the special operations unit, and was the midnight shift commander. He also was a member of the patrol division and the youth services bureau.
Currently, he heads the firearms training unit, which is responsible for training the rest of the officers in firearm use. He is federally and state trained.
He is also the head of the commanding officer of the Bureau of Administrative Services, which includes dealing with the media on a daily basis. He took over the job in 2004 after Lt. Lou Griffith died.
"Vinny was exceptional at what he did," said Carl. "He was a natural fit to take over for Big Lou. He’s an unique person and it takes a unique person to do that job."

Bolton Selectmen made a GREAT choice. Lt. Alfano is the best and will be missed in Framingham. Bolton PD will be in good hands.
