Brimfield policeman charged with assault

By Kim Ring TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

STURBRIDGE—
An officer from the embattled Brimfield Police Department will be arraigned today in Palmer District Court on a charge of assault and battery.

Christian J. Petersen Jr., 35, who also serves as animal control officer in Brimfield and Holland, turned himself in at the state police barracks in Sturbridge at about 10 p.m. Saturday. He was released on $500 bail, police said.

Mr. Petersen lives in Holland and has served in Brimfield more than five years as a police officer. State police did not have details of the incident that sparked the charges.

Mr. Petersen’s arrest is the latest in a series of problems in the Brimfield Police Department.

Last fall, Police Chief Charles T. Kuss came under fire for hiring Patrick L. O’Donoghue as an officer after officials learned that Mr. O’Donoghue was on probation related to a threatened sexual assault of a minor.

Mr. O’Donoghue, of Paxton, pleaded guilty to a criminal misdemeanor in March 2004 on a charge of attempting to commit a crime. According to court records, he was placed on two years’ probation after he called a neighbor “and threatened to rape and assault her 12-year-old daughter” in September 2003. He was a member of the Paxton Police Department when the incident occurred, and resigned from the Paxton force in October 2003, citing personal and health reasons.

Last year, the town was ordered to pay $29,937.27 to current and former police officers after a labor dispute that began when selectmen effectively disbanded the force nearly two years ago, shortly after officers had voted to unionize.

Charges against Brimfield Officer Todd J. Canedy, of Monson, were dropped last fall after his girlfriend refused to testify against him. Mr. Canedy had been charged with assault and battery.

Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Diane Panaccione said yesterday she had not heard about Mr. Petersen’s arrest and could not comment.

I can't believe the State has not stepped in. What happened in Spencer some years back is nothing compared to what has been going on in Brimfield.

Hold your fire Chuck, hold your fire! LOL

As far as the title "What is wrong with this town?", the answer is simple - "EVERYTHING" and it starts within its own government (selectmen). These folks are a bunch of hippies that want to be left alone by the Police. If you give a resident a ticket, you just wasted paper because "someone will know someone" . The Fire Department (volunteer) have some of the finest equipment in the area, because god forbid a resident's house burns down. But you better leave his meth lab and wacky tobacky greenhouse alone. They need someone like me there to stir things up..LOL

It appears this guy is a return from the "old" crew.

Actually, He was the scab dog officer that was directing traffic while we were picketing.

Can you believe this?

Just a recap for everyone....

A Selectman that was convicted of tax evasion hired a Police Chief that did not have police powers. This Police Chief hired two individuals that were accused of beating up their girlfriends and another hire that was on probation for threats to rape a minor.

That about wraps it up...

WTF!

And they say it's tough to get a LE job in this state... I know what I'm doing wrong, I'm being too good... this weekend I'll go pick a fight, sell some drugs, and drive drunk. Then apply Monday morning to Brimfield PD.

I wouldn't go that far... you might end up being the Chief.

Not bashing the current Chief though. Granted the town did the mistake of hiring him before he had powers. But he IS a good guy. It's just that his hiring practices need to be tweaked.

Brimfield is bad but not even half as bad as what Spencer went through. I Spencer is pretty squared away now.

The current Brimfield "alleged women beater" with issues WAS NEVER EVER part of the "Old crew" !
In 2003 he was the dog catcher <woof woof> who wanted to be a cop so bad that he scabbed us over the minute we were locked out. He was rewarded by Selectman Cheney and crew with a badge but still also remains the dog catcher <bow Wow> today.

Also, Cheney (The Selectman) was not just convicted of tax evasion. HE WAS CONVICTED OF 4 COUNTS OF STATE TAX EVASION , FINED and placed on PROBATION yet continues to screw... uh, I mean serve the good residents of the town of Brimfield with public safety and town services close at heart.

Just wanted to set the record straight. Only in Brimfield, Folks..... Only in Brimfield !

Stay Safe,

Dave
