Troopers, when the Crown Vic goes out of production and it comes time to get new cruisers, what would you like the state to go with? what kind of lights, lightbars and equipment would you also like to have?

Posted by: frank

Dude, you aren't MarlboroughCitizen, are you?

Just checking...

Posted by: Crvtte65

Posted by: chief801

LED's, Push-bumpers, sirens....oooooh, I'm getting close.......UUUUUGH! Wow that was good for me! LOL

Posted by: Gil

Doxparadise are you some sort of vendor with a state contract or just someone that likes cop cars?

Posted by: Wolfman

As soon as I get my combination lotion dispenser / Kleenex box / dash light mount patented, I will be a millionaire...

Posted by: RedWaterMan

I know some Virginia State Troopers drive Camaros, that can't be all bad.

Im just a college student whos gonna enter the academy when i get out of school. I cant wait to start. I was just wondering what type of cruiser you guys would like to have. Id personally go with the Dodge Charger. Im also looking for a job (obviously not an officer) or internship with a police department this summer for some experience if anyone knows of one. I live in lexington when im home from school. Any info would be appreciated thanks.

I'll jump in here before the wolves come out of the walls. First of all, I see that you are eighteen years old, and unfortunatly you cannot be a sworn officer until you are 21. Otherwise, I would say to look down the cape for a summer job--there are a lot of opportunities. I was lucky, because I started as a summer officer at 18 before this new law came into effect. If you play your cards right and know your place in the feeding chain, you can end up with a full-time position when all is said and done.
Also, you can't just "enter the academy." It's a very long process with civil service, but if you plan everything accordingly...i mean everything...it can be done, dont listen to the people that say it's impossible to get a job in this state because it's not. So good luck, but at 18 the only thing you can do right now is keep yourself out of trouble.

ENLIST ENLIST ENLIST.... Military service is a major MAJOR key in this process. I'm being pretty hypocritical right now, having no militray/police experience, but I know that my ride would have been much shorter/smoother had I been a veteran. It took me 8 years to get a job because of this. And to be honest (brutally) the only reason I hit the law enforcement lottery was because of 9/11. I'm not trying to be crude... just honest with someone who seems to be as naive as I was at that age about the realities of finding a job in MA. If you make it, it will be the proudest, happiest day of your life. But, for many, California or just about any other state is the answer. I have a buddy who actually moved to L.A. just to recognize his dream. I think it's better to know this at 18 than to go years and years thinking that all you have to do is fill out an application. I sincerely wish you the best of luck and implore you to further research your options.

Enlisting is a good idea if you want to go that route. The way I did it was to take every and ANY test that is availible. My resume is long. Don't just say "hey I want to be a Trooper so I'm only going to take that test". That's a mistake. Go through the process at every level (Local, State, and Federal...maybe even private sector) even if you don't think you would want the job. The best feeling is to have a department offer you a job and you having the oportunity to say "no thank you". Also, being as young as you are, you are in a great position to research many organizations and explore what type of experience you can gain. I wish you the best of luck. Never give up, don't listen to the negitivity, it can be done.

yeah especially if u miss or decide to wait and skip a MSP test and then u gotta wait 4 or 5 years to test then 2-4 years to get to the msp academy. the ur kicking yourself in the ass because u decided not to take the test during ur sophmore year cause u figured u'd finish school and take the next test. next thing u know ur taking ur first test @ 26 and ur not on your way to the academy till ur 28 or 30.
so taking every damn test for every PD, f/t, p/t muni, state, county, fed or seasonal, DoD or private sector might just be the right thing to do.

and no, that wasn't me. just something i can see some1 who is uneducated in the difficulty in becoming a MA LEO.

You are right. I am on a California police department that is very understaffed (and underpaid) and hires about 150 new officers a year. LAPD is 1,000 officers understaffed at this point. Phoenix PD is hiring like crazy also. If you don't want to go too far away, Florida or North or South Carolina may be a good choice. Working a major metro area will give you the most excitement and best experience. In the mean time, you can take the State Police exam and wait you turn.

I was able to get picked up after putting myself through the police academy right after college. I have taken the MA civil service exam 4 times with scores in the high 90s and never have been contacted by even though I have 6 years experience and a masters degree.

Something that you might consider that I did also is join the Coast Guard Reserve. If you do this, you will eligible for upto $4500 a year for reimbursement for college. You can go to boot camp over the summer (8 weeks) and go to A school the next. Port Security Unit (PSU) 301 is located on Cape Cod and would be a great unit to join (I am an officer at PSU 311 in Long Beach).

Are you on San Diego? If so, I thought their pay is pretty decent.

Posted by: Doxparadise

Yea i was thinking about going to California. My floormate is from Oakland and has the same aspirations. We attend American University in DC, so i wont even have the benifit of the Quinn Bill. They also pay better in California and don't have to rely on details. Its too bad its so hard to find work in MA. I know a Sgt. in my town and have done many ride-alongs. It would be nice to police your home town, but oh well, at least i have family in California. thanks for your guys help

Yes-SDPD and No pay. Actually we just got a 7.0 decrease in pay (contribution to retirement went up). The city is in financial shambles. We are looking at no raises for 4-5 years. Our base pay may be higher than some MA agencies but we don't work details and the price of a house is about 100k more here in southern cal. The only OT I will get is a Chargers or Padres game...maybe some extension of shift. Fresno PD makes more than us and we are the lowest paid now in the county (we were the highest when I came on. Although I didn't become a police officer for the money. Alot of our officers are jumping ship to places like Chula Vista and Santa Ana. Some agencies start at 91k in Orange County base pay for laterals. I am just not interested in one of the smaller departments because of the lack of ability to transfer to different units.

Other than the fact that we have the oldest air unit in the world and I usually pushing a cruiser with over 110k miles on it we are not a bad police department.

Doxparadise,

At your age have you thaught about checking with your schools Police Dept.? Maybe you could do dispatch or Security for the school, but it would atleast get you into the Law Enforcement area so you could see what Police work is all about and if this is what you really want to do for a living, plus a lot of cops start out as dispatchers or Security. It also looks good on a resume compared to I worked at Mcdonalds for four years while in college. Also if your in DC why would you want to come back to MA stay there, you have Metro PD and every Federal Agency known to man there; it would only be a matter of time before you got a job there once you graduated. Good Luck.

The price of SD real estate tripled in 5 years. The pit maneuver is useless against Sherman tanks. You're on the Mexican border...and they decrease your pay? Hmmm.

Here we are turning down 6-10% increases.

You must have seen BPD122 on his Detail today...The funny thing is he has more lights on his 4 wheeler than his focus.

something i learned out in san diego is that you can't be underpayed. not u DON'T wanna be underpayed u CAN'T. i couldn't afford to move my wife and kids out there. gov't housing was a 2-3 year wait. i'm lucky i had barracks. i new some guys that were reservist (navy) & san diego PD. well i guess i will stay away from SoCAl.

what is this infatuation w/ light bars? Please dont tell me people care about stuff like this.

Good Equipment is nice-but the job is the the most important thing to focus on. CMPSA is a good starting point-just ask their prosecutor, MPD61.

Posted by: Andy0921

the charger would be a nice cruiser still like the crown vic better though

Posted by: Wolfman

Posted by: NH Cop

I’d like to have one of those BACKOFF signs.

Posted by: Wolfman

You think the bosses would get upset if these started appearing on the back of patrol cars?

Posted by: j809

We just got a police package Dodge Magnum with only 300 miles to test out for a week. I test drove it today and all I can say is , WOW. The Hemi power is incredible, the suspension and handling is out of this world and the interior space is fantastic. I assume the Charger will be very similar. I will post some photos soon.

Yes and Yes. It had cage in it, looked more spacious for officer and prisoner. Very comfortable, nice center console with lots of space. Only thing it did not have was a cupholder, but that would be something that could be added to the center console.

Will the Chief let Part-Timers drive the test cruiser? If so my days off this week are Monday and Tuesday w/ all dayshifts open...

Posted by: BPD110

If we get one in the boro we might not give it back...We almost had to call you up to borrow your P.O.V. for patrol.

The only catch is the Crown Victoria is not going out of production. It is going to be produced for Law Enforcement agencies ONLY.

Don't care as long as it:
1. Starts
2. Heat / AC works
3. Does not have a strange funk going on, Like when someone leaves food under seat.
4. Brakes Work
5. Radio works
6. Head lights work

Posted by: Mitpo62

Neither! How about the Impala or the ole' Dodge Diplomat. Now there's a TRUE screamin' cruisin' machine!

Posted by: 2-Delta

El Camino w/ fuzzy dice, leopard seats, chain stearing wheel, and a vector light bar.

Posted by: 40th MPOC#309

I'm willing to give it a try. Let's hope it doesn't have too many bugs to work out. At least it's American made-by a German conglomerate. SEIG HEIL!!!!

Dickie-pig! looks like we are getting your old #209 after all. I heard that MOPAR R & D was looking into the feasability of putting two (2) slant sixes together on a common crankshaft,
and resurrecting the Monaco name for a new "highway patrol" Car (V-12, 500+ horsies!)

EXACTLY!! Who cares, as long as the car goes.....SAFELY. To all you new guys...Equipment is the FIRST thing lost in the budget (next to manpower). You wanna be a cop...get used to driving a POS. Yes, even the troopers do too!!

Posted by: EOD1

yeah but its ur POS and no 1 else scums it up but u!

Posted by: Blueflu1

I used to care about equipment, but lately I dont give a crap. We are lucky to have cars lately. We barely have anything to patrol in. I would like a charger but I would be happy to have anything at this point. I liked the old Chevy caprices. Circa 96' with the LT1 motor. Those SCREAMED. although they were ugly. Much better then when we had the pre 96 ones with the covered wheel wells.
