Will Boston let you defer?

I just got my conditional offer from Boston, but I'm in my last semester of classes at Northeastern. I'm supposed to graduate on May 6, but the academy is going to start in mid/late March. Does anyone know if they'll let me defer to the next academy class (I'm guessing August/September)? It would help out SO much, and give me a lot more breathing room. Thanks.

I highly doubt it, its civil service, you either accept or not accept the position. If you only have a semester left you can bang that out once your on the job. Trust me, dont even ask to postpone it, there are hundreds of qualified applicants waiting in the wings. Also with civil service you may never get a chance again. Just my opinion though. Good Luck.

TAKE THE JOB IF OFFERED!!!!!!!

Go back to school after you graduate the academy. You never know when this oppurtunity will present itself again.

Holy God man... Take the job!!

Once your on mids, you can always bang out the rest of your classes.

I agree with all the other above posters. You would be foolish to pass this opportunity up. You can always finish college at a later date. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, the spring semester hasn't even begun. So you can WD from all of your classes w/out penalty to you or your GPA (if you care about that).

Northeastern University will still be there in a year, the job offer most definitely will not.

Don't ever defer a civil service job in Mass for school reasons only especially if you are going to school for Criminal Justice.
22 and getting a conditional offer you don't know how lucky you are.

TAKE THE JOB........SCHOOL WILL ALWAYS BE THERE! You never know when and if this shot will come up again......Good Luck!

I know some people passed in their applications early, but I didn't realize that ANYONE had taken the PAT yet. Don't you usually get a conditional offer after you've passed the PAT?

Posted by: Sweegs

No one to my knowledge has taken the PAT yet; those should be in February. Part of the Conditional is passing the PAT, medical, and psych.

Are you sure it was an offer of emplyment and not just a letter for the next testing phase? When we were there last Friday they mentioned that the PAT wasn't going to be give till Feburary....What are you ranked? Vet/None-Vet? CS Score....

I thought the Conditional Offer came after the PAT. Do you know if you successfully completed/passed the BG Investigation?

What was your rank?

Hmmmmm....very interesting!

Me Thinks Sweegs might have misunderstood something or might be trying to stir up the ole rumor mill a tad. As far as I have heard, the BPD is so backed up with backgrounds and interviews that the idea of conditional offers seems quite premature. How can they send an offer without even attempting the PAT? That seems kind of backwards. Last I heard, BPD was in the middle of oral boards and psych evals with the early birds.

They could easily send you a conditional offer of employment pending you pass the PAT,Psych and Medical.

No idea how Boston PD does it but I got a conditional offer after the background completion and the stipulations were that I must pass the medical, psychological, etc.. I'm sure everyone does it differently though.

Yep.

Interesting. Well, I know some people applied early, like AFCOP. I'm curious to see if he got an unconditional offer too, since the 3 other people I know that put in their applications at the end of December haven't heard diddly squat. I was also informed that they have just added some new detectives to the background process, and not all of those detectives have been assigned applicants yet.

With the amount of people trying to get onto departments in this state, especially Boston, your crazy if you pass up the chance. Take a semester or two off, whatever needs to be done to get through the academy and FTO. You'll have 30 more years to finish that semester of school, go for a masters, or further. Listen to all the people that posted before me, it's probably one of the only times there will be pretty much unanimous agreement on this board. If you recieved a conditional offer... take it!
