Sick Policy

I am curious what other PD's policy is regarding sick time. We have been in a constant battle with our Chief about the current sick policy. As of now, we can use 6 days throughout the calendar year, no questions asked. Once we use more than 6 days, we must bring in a Dr's note every time we are out sick, and it must state the reason(illness) why we were out. I know that this is not a City-wide policy, just a PD policy.

I beleive our policy is that you only need a Dr. note if you are out for 3 or more consecutive days.

For my dept., you are allowed to bang in up to 3 days in a quarter. Any more than 3 days and you need a doctor's note.

More than 3 consecutive sick days needs a note. We accrue 1 sick day a month, which accrue to like, 75 maximum or something. We can use 3 a year as "personal" days. And every quarter that you don't bang in sick, you get a free day off also.

We get 12 sick days a year at full pay, then it goes down from there. We don't need a doctor's note unless the employee is suspected of abusing their sick time. At that point, a supervisor may drive to your house and conduct a "sick check."

We aren't allowed to use sick days as "personal days." Of course some people probably do so but it is technically not allowed.

Accure 15 days per year/doctors note after 8 consecutive only if Chief requests it, no buy back, sort of a free for all.....

Is this part of your collective bargaining agreement? If so, in today's cash strapped times, contract language can be just as valuable in the long run until better pay raises can be reached. A pay raise is great in the short term but good language can last forever since the greatest advise in bargaining is to never give up something you fought so hard to get.
