Main Page Auxiliary (et al) Ride along's

we have no p.i's, specials, auxillary or part timers - I'm curious as to how a full time officer feels about having to ride with one of you ? No disrespect intended - it just seems like it would be a hassle.. what has been your experience ?

We don't have any of those types either, but I guess you have to look at it from their point of view. Though it may be a hassle to have someone else in the car with you, they are just where we were at one time, trying to take whatever chance they get at doing the job. Though if they didn't have at least the reserve academy under their belt, I'd say that's a liability to have another gun in the car.

Although we don't have any either, I would be more than happy to take them. Like lax says, most of us were in that position before. On the outside looking in.

I'm wondering why it would be a hassle? As long as they are willing to listen and learn, I would think it wouldn't be a problem.

I bring out civilian ride alongs all the time and don't mind at all. Also, when I was an FTO, a new boot was just like having your version of a part timer or a special or such...

It all depends for me. I've never taken out an Aux. with me, but I have had a P.I. come along for a few hours. If I'm in a proactive mood I don't mind. If I'm tired and want to be reactive I prefer to be on my own.

If they're a hassle, it's because they're yahoo's and are more eager to be "go get 'em" than to be learners. So in that event, I would probably dumped the kid off within a few minutes.

I would be more than happy to show someone the ropes / get some exposure to the job. It's how I got my start, so I would like to say that I will not forget my roots, but every now and then you do get a "yahoo". Every Dept. w/ aux. & Res. Ofc. has them, you just have to deal w/ them accordingly.

As an Auxiliary officer I would like to just add something. My department has officers that mind & don't mind taking us out on patrol. We don't take it personally, we understand that most of the full timers aren't sure of who we are and what to expect from us. Lucky for us we can also take a car out with two Auxiliary officers. We also know our role, we aren't call jumpers,we don't cause headaches or paperwork for our fulltimers. If they need us they call us our or duty SGT. assigns us to assist. Personally, I have been very fortunate to gain valuable experience & knowlegde from my time & ride alongs. Just know if you need us for anything we will assist you however we can. We all appreciate what you do for us.
