TV’s Starsky and Hutch had nothing on a veteran MBTA officer whose harrowing encounter with a suspected thief left the daring cop stuck on the roof of a speeding car.
T officials said officer Stephen Pagliuca, 49, jumped onto the car after the suspect, Terrance French, 24, backed into him to try to escape a Lakeville commuter rail lot Thursday.
Pagliuca “jumped onto the trunk to prevent him from being pinned against another car,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. “He was on it for 15 to 20 feet before he fell off.”
Pesaturo said Pagliuca had approached French after he saw him looking into a car parked in the commuter rail lot. After a brief discussion, French allegedly bolted to a nearby car and tried to flee, forcing Pagliuca onto the trunk in the process.
Pesaturo said Pagliuca crawled onto the roof of the car as French accelerated, reaching his arm through the window to try to get a hold of the suspect.
Although Pagliuca was thrown onto the asphalt - suffering bruises to his left thigh and hip - transit police tracked French to a Brockton hotel and arrested him late Thursday night.
Pesaturo said French faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, breaking into a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, driving to endanger and driving with a suspended license.
As for Pagliuca, he was treated and released from a Taunton hospital and has since returned to work.
