Private Colleges with Town/City Police Powers?

I've spent that last hour and 22 minutes searching the forums for information regarding private colleges in MA that have police powers through the towns/cities that the colleges are located in. For the past hour and 22 minutes, I have had no luck finding any posts that contain such information. So, anyone out there work for a private college and have your powers through a town/city, not the sheriffs or SSPO? Specifically, police powers as a special or part time town/city police officer? Any help with this would be much appreciated! And if this has previously been discussed to death, then my apologies for not finding it.

Babson College and Wellesley College used to be sworn in by Wellesley PD as specials. I believe they were also sworn in as SP Specials.

My quick search shows that something called the Boston Conservatory uses special officers licensed by the Boston Police Department. Also, the Boston Architectural Center contracts with Longwood Security. If these officers have police powers, they would get them from the BPD.

Re: Private Colleges with Town/City Police Powers?

Are you looking for private college PDs that only have city/town powers? I think you will be hard pressed if so. Most or them need the SSPO as their primary authority, but get the city/town and/or sheriff for supplemental authority if the happen to end up out of the usual playground.

State college PD...whole different story, dump the SSPO as you do not need them, unless you want them screaming Mullins! Mullins! every time you take the stand, and this was even a state college PD case, go figure. We had an OUI motion to supress a few days ago even, and the dipstick unprepared defense attorney started on the Mullins BS, we have not had SSPO for at least two years, and the officer on the stand rightly informed the leach, err defense attorney, what our specific chapter and sections were, crack a book next time Esquire. Even had the judge spanking him, time for the defendant to get his money back.

Re: Private Colleges with Town/City Police Powers?

Dean College police officers are sworn in through the town of Franklin as Special Police Officers. They receive their authority under the umbrella of the town. They are not SSPO's or Dep. Sheriffs.

Re: Private Colleges with Town/City Police Powers?

The main reason it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to go with city/town powers is that most colleges, universities and hospitals these days have property which is located in more than one community. This was ONE of the reasons the state stepped in back in the mid-60s. You could conceivably have a guys sworn in, in two or three communities. Tufts is an excellent example. Main campus is in Medford and Somerville, the Med School is in Boston and the Vet School is in Grafton. Hell, that's even three different counties!
