So you're a firefighter that wants to play cop?

I envy your "prior patrol procedure on a Local Dept"

The pros are you can get hired as a scab at a cut-rate wage because the mighty sheriff and his band of thieves have been known to throw labor laws out the window, kicking the union members right in the stones. Write a check or hold a sign and you don't have to work the blocks and can go right on a ninja team.

The cons? Well, it's a jail. There are cons there. (Sorry, that was a softball)

Ninja team? Is that a reference to those "whackers" who takes pictures of themselves dressed all in black, posing with airsoft guns?

Re: Questions On Worc. County Sheriffs Dept.

Well lets say you get a job here at Worcester, County. You can travel down 2 roads.

1st take the reserve academy and all your procedures and throw them out the window because it's not going to matter unless your directing traffic on the upper tiers of maxi Make sure you bring your whistle. COs don't need all those funny certificates. (But you could use this job as a stepping stone like some people.) But the problem is No police jobs out there so you might be here awhile.

2nd write a nice big fat check and play the GAME and when you get out of the academy find yourself 3-11 on patrol driving around in circles. Maybe even going to D.D for the high sheriff himself.
Before you apply ask yourself a couple questions do you want to be a police officer? If the answer is yes take the civil service exams and do what needs to be done. But like I said above there are NO jobs!
Or if you want to be a underpaid CO with tuesday and wednesday off for the next 15 yrs, with a summer vacation in (Oh wait we don't get them in the summer). At least you'll have that clothing allowance oh wait we don't get that anymore either.
Well like I said you make the call. On another note the Union is stronger then its ever been and the rumors are starting to come out that the almighty Sheriff is looking elsewhere to continue his reign of misjudgment in Boston.

Don't get me wrong it's a state job with good benefits and you can leave after 20 YIPPEE!!

If you resort to becoming a CO, then i suggest you pursue it through the DOC. Same job as the county sheriff's, but better pay, civil service (more fair play than the county). 2 basic requirements; watch the cons and hold up a wall. I love it, i grew up wanting to be a CO since the 3rd grade! :p

:dito:

Definitely go for the DOC if your seriously thinking of getting into corrections.

You can get your feet wet there while you wait to go to the DOC.

The DOC overall has better benefits than our county brothers.
