BILLERICA -- Employees at the Middlesex Sheriff's Office found a pleasant surprise in their paychecks heading into Memorial Day weekend -- an extra week's pay.
Sheriff James DiPaola said he gave out the money as a "reward" for the sacrifices his employees have made throughout the year. Namely, agreeing to take 10 days off without pay last fall and collectively taking $300,000 less in overtime this fiscal year.
But to one government watchdog group, the $750,000 in bonuses adds up to poor fiscal management.
Michael Widmer, executive director of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, called the spending "illogical." "If we were at the end of the fiscal crisis it might make sense to give an end of the year reward, but in the next two fiscal years we're going to require more budget cuts," said Widmer. "So it makes no sense when you've already asked employees to make a sacrifice to essentially pay back half of that without making them work."
Nice, a sheriff looking out for his troops. The state gives bonus checks out ever week to people who don't work, its nice to see money going out to the actual workers for a change!!!
