Fresh off the weekend, I'm recharged and back with another stupid question for the forum!
I think you could reasonably conclude that a solid percentage of the people leaving barrooms at last call and getting in their cars are above the legal limit and hence breaking the law. Maybe not falling down drunk, but impaired to some degree.
Yes there are designated drivers, but come on. We're all men and women of the world here.
Lord knows I was irresponsible a number of times back in the day and drove when I shouldn't have. But I got lucky - never got pulled over.
But it is not like the police run a dragnet outside every bar and pull over all the cars -- nor is it possible due to available resources, as I fully understand.
I realize the people who are really wasted do tend to get caught - not the least because they get into a crash.
However, overall the situation has the net effect of giving people the impression they can get away with DUI pretty often and easily.
My past transgressions notwithstanding, I think the DUI laws should be a lot tougher. Nothing but an act of God will provide enough police to 'arrest everyone who leaves a bar' as I mentioned. But if there was some SERIOUS penalty at stake for DUI -- not that the current laws aren't stiff at all -- I think designated driving would go up and we'd have safer streets at night.
Can't tell you how many times I have been behind someone who's tanked up, or have someone drunk blow past me in the other direction or pop out of a side street and nearly cause a wreck.
Time for my question which is in two parts:
1) Your reaction to my read on this problem of lots of drunks vs. no resources to arrest them all.
2) Should the DUI laws be stronger?
Going onto a law enforcement website and asking if DUI laws should be stronger is like going onto a Mormon website and asking of Brigham Young was a great man.
I'm on the job at Six Flags- Western Mass whacker 2009.

My answer in two parts:
1) Without a doubt, not enough resources in THIS STATE, can't speak on other states.
2) There are things that can be done to toughen up the laws, granted they recently passed Melanie's law in MA.
Is there supposed to be some discussion with these questions or debate? The other thing that seems to bother me and I am sure others about your questions is that you seem to be digging for information and opinions or spark up a debate. There have been members on here who have tried to use snippets or quotes in actual newspaper articles, so maybe you can see why there is some cynicism or skepticism over your intent.

I don't write for any newspaper, and I'm not in school anymore, so no, that's not my intent here...
It is a public forum though, so I suppose some paper could link or cut-and-paste material from here. That would be pretty lame and underhanded.
That said - yes 100 percent I am starting to spark a discussion and to dig up opinions. Isn't that what an open Q&A forum like this tends to do?
If you guys aren't comfortable voicing your opinions on these topics I can certainly respect that.
Billy, Billy, Billy... There's something not quite right with you and your questioning. I'm overly skeptical.
You remind me of a fat chick that takes her Myspace pictures above her head and at a 45 degree angle so that it hides her fatness.
There's an illusion going on here... But I just can't figure it out yet.
this question is dumb, police enforce laws and can't change them anymore than you can, there aren't police on every corner or in every other car...therefore, like every law, people get away with breaking it sometimes
stiffer penalties? people like to drink....people like to have their license.....people have the vote.......you do the math on that one
you need to ask less questions (unless rhetorically comedic) and you need to read every single thread on the site before asking a philosophical question
how old are you? did your father teach you things when you were younger? the guy that wants to be everyone's friend right from the start freaks most people out

Tell me what you drive and what establishment you will be leaving from this weekend and I will help you come to grips with your transgressions of years past.
